Peacocks and Lilies

Reflections on the Literary Quote of November 21, 2013

Although I admire John Steinbeck to the nth degree with his The Grapes of Wrath, a truly great American novel, if not the greatest American novel of the 20th century, I disagree with his statement that peacocks and lilies are useless. They may not garner any profit in a capitalistic society such as ours, but they do easily fulfill their purpose on this earth as living entities to please our sight and soothe our souls. Those two benefits are blessings that money simply cannot buy.
